Mentoring Youth in Storytelling and the Arts
The WestSide StoryArt Collaborative supports storytelling through the arts by pairing community-based artist-mentors with middle grades (4th-8th) youth in Central Ohio.
We Believe:
Everyone is a storyteller. Artists and youth can tell spectacular stories in every art form. The arts enable new risk taking, new discoveries, and new visions for oneself, one's peers, and one's community. Communities can see their own strengths and ingenuity through youth StoryArt.
Communities Need Their Own Stories
Too often, communities on the margins of economic power are only viewed through a deficit lens, depicted in news media as violent and despairing. Youth storytelling and art shift the lens to possibilities and hope –which youth and artists will make visible to a wide audience, including the news media.
